Volunteers needed for September 11 Day of Service in Mesa
The City of Mesa’s First Annual September 11 Day of Service is the result of a partnership involving Mesa, Phoenix, Glendale, Rebuilding Together and HandsOn Greater Phoenix to organize a new weekend of service to commemorate the eighth anniversary of September 11, 2001.
As the official end to President Obama’s nationwide service initiative, “United We Serve,” this weekend will provide high-quality, meaningful service opportunities at a variety of sites in the valley with a special focus on supporting the men and women who have made a commitment to serve our community and our country.
Volunteers are needed for three major projects in Mesa Friday, September 11 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.:
• Painting curb numbers. Clear, visible house address numbers on curbs is a positive step in terms of helping emergency responders quickly find an address. Finding a house quickly could save a life. This project needs 50 to 60 volunteers.
• Painting fire hydrants. Fire hydrants throughout the City require regular maintenance, including painting. When the hydrants are painted, they provide higher visibility for fire crews when responding to fires and aesthetics to the neighborhood. This project needs 30 volunteers.
• Building Strong Neighborhoods door-to-door surveys. Volunteer teams will go door-to-door to survey community members in this low-income area. Survey results will help address issues and concerns in the neighborhood and assist residents in bringing in new resources and building a stronger community. The minimum age is 18. This project needs 30 volunteers.
