The City of Mesa’s free “Living Green” workshop series continues Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1:30 p.m. with a seminar on “Landscape Plants for Shade, Color & Wildlife” at the Mesa Main Library, 64 E. 1st St. The Development and Sustainability Department and Mesa Library are presenting the monthly workshop series featuring earth-friendly advice for your home and garden.

“Landscape Plants for Shade, Color & Wildlife”, presented by Master Gardener Greg Morris, will show participants how to select plants that will create beautiful, water-efficient, and functional landscapes that can also cool your surroundings with shade. The presentation will specify the best wildlife attracting plants to grow and how to achieve year-round color. Planting and maintenance techniques will also be discussed.

Morris is a Master Gardener, Horticulturist and a Certified Professional Landscape Designer with 20 years experience. His focus has been on sustainable landscape techniques including practices such as green roofs, rainwater harvesting and use of renewable materials. He is currently a principal at LAND FX Design Group, Inc. and president of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers – Phoenix District.

If you can’t make it to the workshop, the City has posted a monthly Sustainability Savings Tip on its Web site, mesaaz.gov/sustainability. February’s tip details how desert plants provide many functions for your landscape.

The aim of the “Living Green” series is to inform the community about why and how to increase the sustainability of our community, and is part of a larger effort by the City to develop and implement innovative programs to address environmental issues and concerns.

The series will continue on the second Saturday of each month with new topics and guest speakers. For more information on the “Living Green” workshop series or the City’s sustainability efforts, visit mesaaz.gov/sustainability or call (480) 644-4400.
