We are fortunate to be able to celebrate in this traditional manner in our community, but it is important that we plan safe celebration and check that we are using the right fireworks in the right places. As you prepare to ring in the New Year, review which fireworks are allowed, and safe, and to run through your safety check list before your family begins the celebration. Fireworks are allowed on private property with the owner’s permission. No fireworks are permitted on public property including parks. The fireworks that Gilbert allows during the holiday celebration allow for a fun time when used responsibly: Ground-based Fountains, Party Poppers, Pinwheels, Sparklers, Pinwheels and wheels, Smoke bombs, Snakes, Torches, Wheels. Fireworks not allowed include anything that explodes or goes into the air. Fireworks such as bottle rockets, firecrackers and Roman Candles pose a serious safety issue inside a community. The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce is looking for an outstanding woman in business and is asking for nominations to name a business woman of the year at the second annual Business Woman of the Year Award Luncheon, sponsored by SanTan Learning Center.

Nominations should highlight a business woman who is actively involved in the Gilbert Chamber and the community, has achieved excellence in her chosen field, and who has demonstrated leadership, resourcefulness and creativity in her career. Nominations will be reviewed and an honoree will be selected by the Chamber’s What Women Want…In Business event committee with final review by the Board of Directors.

The second annual Business Woman of the Year Award Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, January 24th at the Elegante Conference Center in Gilbert, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The special event will honor all nominees and award this year’s winner. In addition to title sponsor SanTan Learning Center, the event is supported by National Bank of Arizona and SRP.

The community will come together next week at a special networking fundraiser organized by the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce to benefit youth needing assistance with tuition for programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Gilbert.

Last year, the event raised more than $2,000 for the community club. San Tan Ford will sponsor the event again this year and hopes to raise even more money.

“This organization holds a special place in my heart as much of my youth was spent in my hometown Boys & Girls Club,” said Tim Hovik, General Manager and Owner at San Tan Ford.

Hovik said he still shares many lasting friendships with members of his championship-winning Boys & Girls Club basketball team.

The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, November 15th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Gilbert, 44 N. Oak Street, in Gilbert. General admission is $35; chamber member admission is $25 at the door or $20 with pre-registration. Lunch will be provided by Chick-fil-A of San Tan Village.

Raffle tickets are on sale now at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce for the prize drawing of a 42-inch flat screen, high-definition television. Each entry is $20 and the winner will be drawn and announced at the luncheon, although ticket holders need not be present to win. All proceeds of the raffle with directly benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Gilbert.

Oak St., Gilbert.

Program begins at 7 p.m., come early to browse Desert Rivers’ mobile bookstore for nature guides, children’s books and birding supplies. Refreshments served. Free and open to the public. There will also be an opportunity to visit with one of Wild At Heart’s rescued Burrowing Owls.
A Species of Special Concern, Burrowing Owls live their lives largely in underground burrows made by squirrels, coyotes, skunks and other animals. Small and active both day and night, Burrowing Owls are vulnerable to other birds of prey, animals, and construction.

With over 5,000 artificial owl burrows installed throughout Arizona, Greg describes his latest project with Desert Rivers Audubon to install 64 burrows at Zanjero Park, Gilbert. Immediately adjacent to active farmland, Zanjero is an example of the disturbed land on the fringes of suburban areas Burrowing Owls prefer.

Desert Rivers Audubon is organizing volunteers to dig the burrows, 8am-2pm, Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Zanjero Park, 3785 S. Lindsay Road, Lindsay Road, South of Loop 202, Gilbert. In the spring, volunteers will again be needed to feed and care for the owls while they are acclimated to the site and before their release.

The Burrowing Owl Habitat Project is made possible by a grant from Together Green, an initiative by the National Audubon Society and Toyota to fund conservation projects, train environmental leaders, and offer volunteer and individual action opportunities that significantly benefit the environment.

Desert Rivers Audubon and Wild At Heart will also present a technology forum Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 12pm, as part of the Gangplank Brown Bag Series lunchtime series, 260 S. Arizona Ave. Chandler. Both organizations are seeking advice and brainstorming on social media, mobile technology, and signage to enhance the public’s experience of this Burrowing Owl habitat.
