Golf Tournament and Auction to Benefit Injured Marines

It looks like a 430-mile, four-day bike ride isn’t challenging enough for the 50 cyclists participating in this year’s Ride for Semper Fi. They decided to take on golf as well. On September 19, these cycling enthusiasts are taking a break from their rigorous five-month cycling training schedule to host a golf tournament and silent auction. This tournament will give more than 120 recreational golfers the opportunity to play at one of the country’s premier golf clubs: Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa.

Now in its third year, The Ride for Semper Fi is a philanthropic bicycle ride that begins in Scottsdale and ends three days and 430 miles later at SeaWorld in San Diego. Fifty cycling enthusiasts, including some former Marines, will complete the journey.

This is the first year the organization has augmented its fundraising efforts by hosting a golf tournament. The organization’s goal this year is to raise $177,500 – a number that pays tribute to the year 1775, when the United States Marine Core was founded.

The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, the beneficiary of all funds raised by The Ride for Semper Fi and its golf tournament, is a non-profit charity that has given more than $38 million in grants to more than 15,000 injured Marines and their families. The Fund provides immediate financial assistance to defray hospital bills and recovery expenses.

The golf tournament will be held at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and features beautiful views and fantastic greens on a true desert course. It is consistently rated among the top courses in the United States by ZAGAT Surveys.

Registration for the tournament is open now to the public, and named corporate sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, to sponsor, register, or make a donation, contact Steve Wheeler at (480) 518-1196. Paint Reuse Program

The City of Mesa Solid Waste Management Department’s Paint Reuse Program is a convenient and environmentally friendly way to redistribute unused latex paint. The paint is collected through the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection events and reused to beautify Mesa’s neighborhoods. Prior to redistribution, the latex paint is sorted, mixed by shade (light, medium and dark) and stored in five-gallon containers, which are then made available to Mesa residents and non-profit organizations free of charge.

Guidelines for the Paint Reuse Program include: The request for paint must come from a Mesa resident or non-profit specifically for “non-commercial exterior painting.” All appropriate documentation must be completed prior to obtaining paint. The City of Mesa does not warrantee or in any way guarantee the purity, quality, consistency, etc. of the paint distributed. Paint can only be used on exteriors. A label will be placed on all containers outlining the proper use and disposal of the paint. A quality color and durability disclaimer will also be on the label. Paint will not be delivered. The person requesting the paint must coordinate pick-up.

Distribution of the paint is done on a first come, first serve basis, subject to availability. For more information, visit www.mesarecycles.org or call (480) 644-2690.
