Master Turner's Martial Arts Academy: Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu said, “When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.”

It is this kind of confidence that Master Turner’s Martial Arts Academy (MTMAA) inspires in its students. Whether you’re looking to instill confidence and discipline in your child or want to get a great workout while learning practical self defense, Master Turner has a class for you.
Chaz Turner opened MTMAA five years ago, and his wife Leslie opened her Pilates studio, Gilbert Pilates and Yoga, in the fall of ‘07. They are separate businesses, but the Turners run them together. Both are in the same plaza, just a few doors down from each other.

“[The Pilates studio] was my contribution I guess, since I wasn’t involved with martial arts,” Leslie said. “And there isn’t much Chaz doesn’t know about martial arts.”

When MTMAA first opened, it was a predominantly child-based program. Over the years, the Turner’s have created a program that offers something for the whole family.

“We opened the Pilates and yoga studio because we know how busy parents are these days and wanted to offer them the opportunity to get their own workout in while their children are in class.”

Chaz Turner holds a 5th degree Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a 4th degree in Hap Ki Do and a 1st degree in Jujitsu. He has been practicing martial arts since he was four years old and knows firsthand how the values instilled by martial arts- honesty, integrity, self control- can help a young person stay on the right path and make good decisions.

“Tae Kwon Do as a sport is great for kids from 4- 15 years old,” Leslie said, “and Hap Ki Do is a program for adults”.

“[Hap Ki Do] is very practical self defense – joint locks and escapes and strikes that will help you on the street if you get attacked,” she said.

With both of these styles, flexibility is a necessary component to perform the movements. This is where the Pilates studio comes in handy, particularly for men.

“Men tend to be strong, but inflexible,” Leslie said. “Most men, whether their martial artists or not, would benefit greatly from a regular Pilates or yoga practice.”

Master Turner offers a Thai kickboxing class for cardio, and Leslie offers a mat Pilates class for flexibility. They truly are the yin to each other’s yang.

Both studios are located in the Safeway shopping plaza on the southwest corner of Val Vista and Elliot Roads.

Century 21 - Kathy Butts: Selling your home can be a daunting prospect, but when it comes to finding a realtor you can trust, you don’t have to look any further than Kathy Butts.

“I think a lot of people have a bad connotation of realtors; they think of them as just trying to get sales,” Butts said. “I try to dispel that, figure out what their needs are, give them as professional a service as I can.”

It’s not just the end result that needs to be successful, though: “I want customers to feel like the whole process was easier than they expected and they got better service than they expected,” Butts said.

As far as the process goes, her experience goes far beyond her three years as a realtor. Having grown up in a military family, Butts spent most of her childhood moving.
“I was born in Japan, and just growing up through high school, I probably lived in nine different places, abroad and in the U.S.,” Butts said.

Butts went to ASU to get an education degree in the ’70s, and has lived in the Valley since. So, she’s as familiar with the area as she is with the moving process.

Prior to earning her license, her involvement with realty was through rental properties that she and her husband owned. They enjoyed buying and flipping them.

“I always used a real estate agent, and my friend said, ‘You ought to just get your real estate license,’” Butts said. So, she did.

“I know this has been a bad year for a lot of realtors, but this has actually been my best year,” Butts said.

What is her secret in the ever-changing market of real estate? Perhaps it is that she treats the business transaction as more than just a transaction and the customer as more than just a customer.

“I think it’s just building on referrals, and that’s what makes it great,” Butts said. “When you start getting referrals, it’s like you’re working with friends, because you have a connection with them.”

So when Butts is selling a home or finding a home for people, she tends to take that extra step.

“I’ll show people many homes,I don’t want them ever feel like they’re taking up too much of my time. I want them to be excited, and say this is the one!” Butts said.

If being treated like a friend as well as a customer sounds appealing, you can call Kathy Butts at 602-576-7953 or e-mail her at kbutts@cox.net.
