k Pilates: Anyone who has seen Drew Barrymore lately would have to agree that she is in fabulous shape. Looking tone in her swimsuit on the cover of “People” magazine last month, people may be wondering how she got so fit.

Kendra Jordan doesn’t wonder, because she knows: It’s thanks to Karve, a new fitness routine that Jordan provides at her Pilates studio in Mesa.

“It’s a ballet bar workout that combines Pilates and yoga, but we’re the only studio of our kind to offer this workout in all of Arizona,” Jordan said. “Drew Barrymore goes to a studio that teaches the same kind of class in L.A. called the bar method. We teach the same class, we just call it Karve.”

When Jordan moved to Arizona from L.A. in 2004, there were no Pilates studios in the area. She started working out of her house until her business grew, and she moved into a small leased space in 2006. She moved into her current, larger studio in September 2007, where she now has eight additional instructors and two people helping in the office as well.

With a spa-like atmosphere, her studio provides a great overall experience.

“You come in to work out and you don’t feel like there’s a competitive nature,” Jordan said. “It’s not like being in a gym. The instructors are really there to make sure you’re getting what you need and want out of your workout.”

Jordan provides a lot of options in the studio’s workouts, because she wants to make Pilates and Karve as accessible as possible to everybody.

Anyone who is interested can schedule private one-on-one sessions with an instructor ($50-$60/session), or arrange for duet sessions with a friend ($35-$45 per session) and instructor on the Pilates equipment. The company also provides small group classes (for as low as $15/session, depending on how often you attend).

And then there are the Karve classes, for which you do not need any experience. Everyone is welcome in both Pilates and Karve sessions.

“We have clients ranging in age from 14 to 77. We have football players, baseball players, ballerinas, dancers,” Jordan said. “Our clients come from all different walks of life and physical ability levels.”

The key is, you do not have to be in tip-top shape to get started. That’s not the point, according to Jordan.

“It’s all about strengthening what needs to be strong, and improving flexibility where you need to, so that you’re equally strong and flexible for your own needs and not at someone else’s standards,” Jordan said. “That’s what I really love about Pilates.”

Total Chiropractic & Rehab: The benefits of a chiropractor for any person of any age can be priceless. Total Chiropractic and Rehab in Mesa offers endless combinations of treatments to help patients on their way to recovery, or simply to make people feel their best.
Dr. Davis Fiedler has been helping people for decades. After serving as a paramedic in the U.S. Air Force, he decided to focus on chiropractic medicine. He attended the University of Albuquerque and the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and has been practicing in the Valley since 1987. Dr. Fiedler continues to expand his education in the field with classes in chiropractic orthopedics and Active Release Technique, and he is pursuing certification in nutrition and wellness.

Dr. Fiedler opened his first practice in Florence, Arizona in 2003, and has since expanded his services to the East Mesa area. Recently, he was chosen as the keynote speaker and local educational expert for the American Consumer Education Foundation. With this kind of experience and recognition, anyone walking into Dr. Fiedler’s office knows they are in good hands.

Dr. Fiedler is the only physician at Total Chiropractic and Rehab, so patients will always see the same chiropractor. This personal attention will help Dr. Fiedler customize each visit to each patient’s needs.

“There is no such thing as cookie-cutter visits,” he says. Dr. Fiedler makes it a point to spend enough time with each of his patients to make sure they are getting the therapy they need.

Crystal Bennett, a massage therapist, also works with Dr. Fiedler, because his office is about more than chiropractic care: It combines the two practices with other methods of healing to attack physical problems from all angles.

One other technique used at Total Chiropractic and Rehab is low-level laser therapy, which uses light energy to stimulate cells and produce energy, thus speeding healing. Dr. Fiedler uses several styles and methods of chiropractics, and also offers nutritional supplements to improve patients’ health from the inside out.

That is what is most important to Dr. Fiedler: His goal is not just to realign someone’s back and send them on their way. Treatment in his practice will evaluate a patient’s health in several areas, and he will create a customized plan of action to get that person to his or her optimal health.

Total Chiropractic and Rehab is located at 4406 E. Main St., Suite 106. Office hours are Mondays and Saturdays 9 a.m.-noon, and Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 480-985-2101 or visit www.totalchiropracticandrehab.com for more information.

The Tone Zone: Let’s face it: Big gyms can be intimidating. Fending for yourself on machines that look like they could double as torture devices tends to lack appeal.

Luckily, there’s another option.

“We specialize in training for women who don’t like big gyms,” said Judy Neill, owner of and trainer at The Tone Zone.

Originally started by another trainer 12 years ago, Neill is heading into her third year as owner, with sister/co-owner Debbie Basom, also a trainer. With a degree in physical education, exercise has always been Neill’s business.

“We have equipment that the big gyms don’t have,” Neill said. Two pieces of equipment in particular that The Tone Zone offers – that other gyms wish they had – are the Power Plate and Gravity Trainers.

“The Tone Zone is the only gym in the northeast valley that has these machines and we encourage anyone to come by and try them out.”

There’s no need to be intimidated by the unfamiliar machinery, though, because Neill’s staff is fully certified with the machines to train customers how to use them.

The Tone Zone has four fully certified staff (both ACE and NFPT certified personal trainers) as well as certification specific to our unique training machines.

Several exercise options are available: Customers can choose to work one-on-one with a trainer or join the group training. With group training, there is one certified trainer to no more than six students per class; sometimes the ratio is as low as one to three, according to Neill.

“With group training you pay per month and get two hours a week. Classes and training times are available Monday – Saturday, 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., call for availability.
According to Neill, customers who pay monthly spend approximately $15 an hour for the group training, which is very affordable.

Gravity Trainers use gravity for resistance and work on a pulley system to not only strengthen the muscles but lengthen them as well. This is very appealing to women because it creates a longer, leaner muscle. Pilates is also incorporated to provide additional strengthening to the core.

And, The Tone Zone is offering a spring Special: Gravity Training – buy one month and get half off the second month ($200 value). And, the company’s one-on-one training special is $45 an hour, which is a highly competitive deal.

If you’re still not sure, Neill says: “We would love to have people come in and visit us to see what we offer.”

The Acupuncture Clinic: Many people are looking for ways to restore harmony and balance to their body and life. They want to feel better, have more energy and find that greater sense of wellbeing that seems to be missing. The team of holistic practitioners at The Acupuncture Clinic and Whole Body Therapy has combined their expertise to provide a wide variety of positive solutions.

Three years ago, Mindy Hayden and Tanya Christensen decided to open a natural health care clinic together. They enjoy working side by side; yet also remain independent in their own styles. Both women are Arizona State Licensed Acupuncturists and are nationally board certified by NCCAOM. Both of them also have specialized training from their studies here in the U.S. and abroad in Beijing, China.

Mindy has been a registered nurse since 1997. After becoming increasingly aware of the limitations of allopathic medicine to treat many conditions and imbalances, she decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. Her specialties include all facets of women’s health, with a focus on internal medicine, skin conditions, anxiety and stress-related conditions, menopause and infertility.

Tanya has been a licensed massage therapist since 1997. She is a former massage therapy instructor with special training in Deep Tissue, Myofacial Release, Bowen Therapy, Cranio Sacral and Tui Na. She often combines modalities to more effectively treat patients’ conditions. While she has extensive experience treating back, neck, carpal tunnel and TMJ pain, she also specializes in chronic pain, anxiety disorders, and gastro-intestinal issues.

Tana Elliott has joined the team, adding Life Coaching, Energy Re-balancing, intuitive work, Hypnotherapy, NLP, Aromatherapy, and Bach Flower remedies to the portfolio of options at the clinic. Tana has been practicing holistic healing for more than 20 years.

These women provide individualized and comprehensive acupuncture treatments, being careful to maintain exceptional healthcare standards. The clinic is completely HIPAA and OSHA compliant and uses only prepackaged, one time use sterile needles that are 100 percent disposable. They are used once on one patient, and then they go into a special sharps container that is shipped off and properly disposed of (as required by law).

The clinic offers a wide range of healing modalities, including Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Moxa, Therapeutic Massage, Hypnotherapy, Life Coaching, Energy Rebalancing, Cupping, Gua sha, Tui Na, Magnetic Therapy, Aromatherapy, Bach Flower Remedies and Nutritional Counseling. So as you can see, there are a number of treatments available besides Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine that are effective to help people return to a state of health and wellbeing. A client can expect to receive a comprehensive and extensive evaluation during the initial consultation to determine the most ideal and beneficial treatment.

“Even though various types of pain are the main reason people seek out our help, acupuncture is effective in giving relief for pain and many other conditions. Many people are willing to try acupuncture because they have tried everything else and nothing has really given them the relief or results they are looking for, so they come in to see us. When nothing else works, they end up at our place, and they typically get better.”
