Dynasty Iron Doors: Three years ago, two Mesa men went into business together. Today, they are co-founders of a national company. They went from a 1,000-square-foot office to the present 30,000-square-foot building that houses their corporate Dynasty Iron Doors offices and national distribution warehouse. In 2008 Dynasty has showrooms opening from California to North Carolina.

To say they are a success is a glaring understatement.

Kevin Wright and Eric Swapp both came from construction backgrounds; Wright was a general contractor and Swapp was in the window covering business.

“We decided we wanted to manufacture building products,” Wright said, “make them better and deliver them at a cost-effective price.”

What began as a long list of different products was narrowed down in the first year to just iron entry doors. While this remains their primary focus, they are constantly developing other ornamental iron products as well.

Last year, the duo introduced their garage doors at the International Builder’s Show (IBS) in Orlando, Florida. It was here they signed a four-year deal with Amarr Garage Doors, one of the nation’s largest garage door companies.

In addition to their one-of-a-kind garage doors, Dynasty offers an extensive line of iron products like gates, railing and wine doors to complete any home.

So what is it that sets Dynasty apart? Most iron doors are made only after they are ordered, meaning longer waiting periods. Dynasty took a different approach.

“We’ve completely changed the way you order an iron door,” Wright said. “We’ve taken the most popular sizes and styles and put them in stock. We have over 100 doors of various sizes and shapes in stock, ready for immediate delivery.”

Since signing with Amarr, Dynasty Iron Doors have become available at more than 60 door centers across the country and through more than 3,000 dealers in North and South America. Their corporate offices here in Mesa have the largest iron door showroom in the state.

With their extensive research in the development and engineering of their products, these men are focused on making the best-built iron doors in the industry.
“We’ve got the best-made product,” Wright said. “We’ll outperform any competitor.”

And right now, Dynasty has begun its Grand Opening Sale, where you can get 20 percent off any of their products, whether in stock or ordered. Check their products online at www.dynastyirondoors.com give them a call at (480) 820-5400 or visit their corporate offices at 2360 W. Broadway Road, #106.

One thing is for sure – this company isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Dynasty is launching two new products at this year’s IBS, iron and wood interior doors along with unique new iron windows, but we’ll have to wait and see how they look.

As Wright points out, “The garage doors were a secret last year, and look what it did for us.”

Mesa Photo Studios: “Let’s face it, anybody can be a photographer; all you need is a card and a camera. But there are not that many good photographers.”

When making this observation, Hank de Ronde sounds perplexed rather than critical.

Observations like this one prompted him to turn Mesa Photo Supply, the store he owned and ran with his wife Marianna since 1986, into Mesa Photo Studios 6 months ago. Now they get to be the ones behind the camera, doing what they do best.

“We were in the photo-finishing business for so long. We used to fix [photographers’] mistakes, and then we’d be in the background and they’d get all the credit. This is much better; we get all the credit,” de Ronde laughs.

Whatever your needs are, the de Rondes probably can handle them. Their building has four studios, and projects include weddings, engagement announcements, business shots, in-studio shots and product shots, among others.

The combined experience of the duo speaks for itself. Growing up in Phoenix, Hank’s father had a dark room, so his “exposure” to photography started early. He continued his education with photography classes at East High School in Phoenix and at Mesa Community College.

Both Hank and Marianna have taken classes through Fuji Film USA and the Agfa Corporation, and are master photographers. Hank also has taught classes in basic photography and studio photography at the Mesa Convention Center. In addition, he specializes in lighting, “so we can do basically anything we want with it,” de Ronde said. “We can hide flaws, hide wrinkles – and my wife is real good in Photoshop. She can touch up pictures like you wouldn’t believe.”

As impressive as their résumés are, even more notable is the passion they have for their profession. They don’t just want you smiling for the camera.

“I like it best when people look at their pictures and go, ‘That’s the one,’” de Ronde said. “To be able to capture them the way they envision themselves, that’s important. We want everyone to leave with a smile on their face.”

The de Rondes’ studio stocks and sells some equipment, too. And if you call and mention their ad, you can get 50% off of wedding packages right now. You’ll find many of their pictures in the store or buy some at their website, www.mesaphotostudios.com. Particularly unique are the underwater shots Hank took while scuba diving in Egypt.

Mesa Photo Studios is located at 150 W. Main St. in Mesa; for more information, call 480-969-5766.

Gene Autry Tennis Center

Gene Autry Tennis Center: “Once you get started with tennis, you realize that it is the greatest sport ever invented,” Tom Kenney said.

When Kenney makes this bold statement, it is not in a persuasive tone, nor is it justified by any particulars. He states it like someone would state that the Earth is round or the sky is blue. It’s just a fact, strong and true enough to stand on its own.

This is what he invites people to discover at the Gene Autry Tennis Center (GATC) in Mesa. The GATC is owned by the city of Mesa and managed by East Valley Tennis, LLC, which is managed by Kenney.

Kenney has plenty of experience both with tennis and with the city of Mesa. He has leased this facility and run tennis programs here for about a year and a half.

“Prior to that, I was working for the city for about 30 years, and most of that was administering tennis programs also,” Kenney said. “I’m a tennis player and a tennis professional.”

Kenney discovered his passion for tennis in high school, and has been teaching it for more than 30 years. He offers lessons to people as young as eight years old, the minimum age at East Valley Tennis. The limits stop there, though.

“The [United States Tennis Association] has tournaments for 90 and over players,” Kenney said.

In other words, once you start, the stopping is entirely up to you.

Whether you are a serious, competitive player or you just want to swing the racket around on occasion, the GATC can accommodate you. With 16 tennis courts and a practice backboard court, there’s plenty of room for everyone.

The facility provides lessons, leagues, tournaments and open play if you just want to go out and have a good time. You can rent ball machines, get your tennis racket strung and check out the pro-shop, too.

Kenney points out that there’s a lot to be gained from tennis.

“We’ve had several juniors who grew up playing at this facility and got college scholarships to play tennis,” Kenney said. “You’ll meet a lot of really nice people. You’ll get great exercise, and [tennis] is very stimulating for the mind, also.”

Even if you don’t feel like playing tennis, you can always go to the GATC to be a spectator at its monthly junior tennis tournaments. And starting around late February or early March, spring leagues will be starting up.

The GATC is located at 4125 E. McKellips Rd. in Mesa. For more information, visit www.mesatennis.com or call 480-654-3787.
