Albondingas Soup
Albondingas soup - Delish!

Living in Arizona we get a lot of really fine Mexican food. So when a friend of Mexican descent recommended a local Mexican restaurant, Lulu’s Taco Shop, I listened.

Lulu’s is in a strip mall on Gilbert Road. As we entered, we saw a small place, with maybe 10 tables. I walked up to the counter and started checking the menu posted on the wall. There were a lot of things on the menu that I never heard of before, but how could this be? I eat Mexican food all the time. Oh, yes, this is an authentic Mexican restaurant serving Guadalajara style food, not a typical Americanized place.

The menu includes tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas… all the typical items we come to expect. There are many filling choices including chicken, beef, pork and veggie, but they also have the unexpected option for cabeza and lengua. Remember this is traditional Mexican food, so there are options not seen in Americanized Mexican restaurants. You can order your meal either from the a la carte menu or a platter. They have daily specials so make sure to ask about them.

Chicken Fajita

It was chilly the day we went in and soup sounded great. We shared a bowl of albondigas soup ($7.99) which was spicy with tasty meatballs, celery, carrots and peppers. Delish!

With so many options available, I ordered the chicken fajita platter ($9.40) with rice and beans, and my all time favorite… homemade tortillas. The chicken had a tasty marinade and was tender and juicy. It came with a tortilla so large that it could have covered Texas. It was delicious, but I wish I would have gotten a few smaller tortillas to make it easier to eat. If you want cheese or sour cream for your fajita, they are available for an additional cost.

Chimichanga Platter

My husband ordered the chimichanga platter, ($8.99) and said it was crispy and light. It had very flavorful pork and some beans inside. It was topped with guacamole, sour cream and tomatoes. It was almost too pretty to eat. It was huge and he was only going to eat half, but it was so delicious he could not stop, so there were no leftovers to take home.

Both platters came with beans and rice. The beans were creamy and nicely topped with cheese, and the rice was light and fluffy with a hint of Mexican seasonings cooked through.
