Never Forget a Birthday Again
By Suzanne McLoone

One weekend, I was skimming through some eZines and came across an article called, “7 Secrets of the Super Organized.” Curious as to whether I possessed any of the seven super secrets, I was pleased to learn that I had at least six. (The one I was missing? I don’t plan our meals.) What caught my eye was the caption, “Never forget birthdays.”

This must be a popular topic, because a reader sent me a sample Excel spreadsheet she uses to help her organize the birthdays in her family. She then e-mails the list to her siblings, requesting updated info on new babies and to verify last names and birthdates. Once that is finalized, she e-mails the entire list to everyone in the family.

One thing I have become quite remiss about over the years is my snail-mail correspondence. My writing desk used to be in the living room, all decked out with my latest fountain pen, wax and seals to beautifully send out a quick note or special birthday wish. Now, with e-mail and the internet, I am lucky if I mail out anything.

If sending birthday cards is one of your goals in the coming year, get started by putting together a list of everyone’s birthday. An Excel spreadsheet will be available for download on our website, www.letstalkorganizing.com, if you would like to use this template for your list.

If you are feeling motivated and inspired, here are a few other things you can do to help reach your Never Forget a Birthday Again goal:

1. Make a list of everyone’s birthday
2. Purchase cards ahead of time
3. Address the envelope with the person’s name… now
4. Create a monthly filing system for cards
5. Place the birthday card in a folder of the month it needs to be mailed
6. Purchase little gift cards for those birthdays coming up so you don’t have to worry about it when they arrive
In the end, it is all about setting an achievable goal that you control!

Happy Organizing!
